Hurricane Ivan
8 September 2004

This message is not an official hurricane warning or alert for any country.

1. The National Weather Center in Miami reports that at 12:00 GMT today, the center of Hurricane Ivan was located near latitude 12.5 North, longitude 65.5 West or about 190 miles (310 km) east of Bonaire, the Netherlands Antilles.

2. A Hurricane Warning is in effect for Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao.

3. A Hurricane Watch and a Tropical Storm Warning are in effect for the Guajira peninsula of Colombia and for the entire northern coast of Venezuela.

4. A Tropical Storm Watch for the Southwestern coast of the Dominical Republic from Santo Domingo westward to Pedernales.

5. Ivan is moving towards the west near 16 mph (26 km/h) and a gradual turn toward the west-northwest is expected later today. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 140 mph (220 km/h) with higher gusts.

6. In consultation with the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Jamaica, OCHA is mobilizing a United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) team to be pre-positioned in Jamaica, in view of the expected trajectory of Hurricane Ivan.

7. According to the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency (CDERA, www.cdera.org), the following situation after the passage of Hurricane Ivan was reported:

8. Barbados: More than 200 houses were damaged in the southern part of the island. The Emergency Operations Center remains operational.

9. Trinidad and Tobago: Greater impact has been registered in Tobago, where the Emergency Operations Center remains operational and is coordinating response.

10. Grenada: In St Georges, the capital city, the Emergency Operations Center and the Prime Minister's residence have suffered structural damage.

11. St. Vincent and the Grenadines: More than 1,000 people in shelters.

12. St. Lucia: four shelters have been opened.

13. OCHA is in close contact with the United Nations Resident Coordinator's office in Jamaica and will revert with further information as it becomes available.
